Resolved Question: Roommate staying with us KICKS at the dog?
My parents are graciously housing an adult friend of theirs who is from Oregon, up to Alaska to work at the mines. To my knowledge he doesn't pay rent (and when he does, it's $300... WAY less then it should be, it'd cost him more to stay at a sleazy motel!) and he is basically getting on everyone's nerves.. mostly because his lack of rent and usage of stuff around the house (coffeemaker, shower, sometimes food, etc) Mom and Dad have done a poor job at conveying their wishes to be paid rent on time, monthly, but here is MY problem.
I always knew he didnt care for Piper, my 2 year old Aussie, and prefer the little 3 month puppy, Lacey. Piper barks at him a lot, so i "understand" why.
HOWEVER
last night i was in my room, and i heard him so i looked down the hall. I saw him pick up the puppy and KICK AT Piper to get her to go away. I was shocked and didnt say anything.
If i catch him again, I need a single, short and to the point message conveying that he is not allowed to kick at my dogs. Sometimes I wish Piper would bite, because he would deserve it for that. It was not enough to be actual "abuse" but that's not the point. Kicking at my dogs is unacceptable.
Parents are lame, they won't say anything because they are pushovers. It's time for me to tke matters into my own hands, starting with the dogs.
Also, when he plays with the puppy and Piper comes up to play, he is very rough when he shoves her away. He is just rough in general with her.

Resolved Question: For those that ride year round in the cold.?
What do you ride and what is the lowest tempurature you can start your bike unaided? Suppose you live in alaska and rode to a motel. would your bike start in the morning. Please don't answer if you would use a charger or heater. I have a Honda Rebel that will start unaided down to about 10 f.
The Honda rebel is light and easy to handle on the snow. Perhaps a dual sport would be better suited but it works.

Resolved Question: Backpacking alaska? Can this plan be done for this much money?
I have been scheduling a July or August 2010 Trip to Alaska to do some backpacking. We don't have much money but luckily we are well equipped and willing to really rough it. Roughly our plan is rent a car in anchorage then travel from trail head to trail head spend almost all of our nights on the trail. We will restock our food supplies in between. And only spend a total of perhaps 3-4 nights in motels over the course of the month we plan to spend there. We are hoping to accomplish this with 1500-2000 of spending money once we get there. The rental vehicle will be split between say 4 people and we are planning on hiking in Denali and Chugach parks. Could you help me with budgeting? Keep in mind that we are willing to endure terrible accommodations, would like to spend the majority of our time on the trail and we don't need to eat pricey/good food. Thanks.

Resolved Question: Can someone please edit this paragraph and revise it for me if needed thank you.?
Being married to an army soldier is an amazing experience for my family and me. For example the military gives our family great medical benefits that covers us when we go to the hospital for an emergency visit, and when we go to regular checkups at the doctors or dentist appointment. Also, being part of the military we can live on the army base for free. We won’t have to pay any rent, electric or water bills while on base. If we chose to live off base the army will give us basic housing allowance called BAH, which will pay for our rent. We would have to pay all the other bills. Also after being in the service for two years the army gives the family a loan to purchase a house. Another wonderful thing about being married to an army soldier is that we get to travel to many different locations and see many things that we might not have seen if we weren’t part of the military, such as, Japan; Germany; Alaska, and many other places. Also being part of the military come with great discounts when buying things. Many different places offer discounts for different types of things like, motel room, clothing, food, cars, loans and houses. If we go on base to shop we can buy things cheaper than going to a store in the town or city that we live in. I love being married to an army soldier; it’s an amazing experience for my family and me.
Yes I am married to a soldier. But he is just now starting the process of joining. Thank you for your help!

Resolved Question: I want to backpack Alaska's parks for a month. What is the least I could spend? I don't have a car.?
I would only need to stay in a motel in between hikes. I would need to rent a vehicle. I am interested in seeing 2-3 parks and doing long hikes up to 5-6 days long.

Resolved Question: I am seriously disgusted with my dad & mom, please help?
Long story short, my parents are divorced and live in different states, and that would be okay if that was all there was to it. My mom has made a lot of mistakes as far as being a healthy parent goes. She's let terrible things happen to me and not done anything about them (you can only guess those things), she's definitely made the wrong decisions about men, picking out the ones who treat her and her children bad because SHE enjoys being mistreated. I just have such a hard time comprehending how a mother can let herself and her kids be used and abused by drunken idiots, like it's okay. I've suggested her getting help of some sort but she always refuses. She has multiple sclerosis as well, but every time I'm living with her I always feel like it's an excuse for me to be the parent of my little brother and do everything around the house. I love my little brother and she knows I would do ANYTHING to protect him and make sure he's safe, and she uses it against me. I realize that she is in pain, but she could at least try to be a better parent, and she could show some gratitude for how I've helped her. thank you once a week would be like buying me a brand new car!!! Don't get me wrong, I love my mom, but I just can't help resenting her so much. Sometimes I even feel like she may be making up the whole "M.S" thing, I mean there was a doctor she went to and because we moved she was new, and wouldn't give my mom her shots because she said she didn't believe she had M.S. From the age of three (when she ditched my dad with a note and without notice) to maybe eleven I was homeless (sometimes in cheap roach infested motels, sometimes nowhere), living with different men every year until she finally met one who she "fell in love with" and turned out to be the biggest asshole of them all. We moved from state to state, me missing tons of school, just so she could follow her abusers around, and once we even went to FL with the promise of a fresh start to live with my grandparnets but they wouldn't let us in the house, so again we had no home and were struggling for a bite to eat. This became overwhelmingly frustrating to me, so I finally told my big brother (he was in the military and I was afraid to tell him all about it because I knew he was going through enough), and he immediately called the DFC. So they came, and my little brother went to be with my grandparents and I went to be with my dad. Life was okay for a while, I was enrolled in cousiling, doing well in school, and had my big brother (who *hehe* happens to adore me and help me in any way possible) back in my life, talking to him every day. He was like a savior to me. He was stationed in Alaska because they gave him a list of states to choose from and he picked there because he knew it was my dream to go to Alaska for such a long time. (it truly was, I was always talking about it, and thinking about it). He bought me a camera to help me embrace my passion of photography as well. After a while though, my mom got back in touch with me and she got my little brother again, but I chose to stay with my dad despite her remotely being in a better position. This, of course, brewed hell. She hated me, threatened for me to never see or talk to my baby brother or her again, and called or relationship quits. I had to deal with it in order to FOR ONCE, do something for myself. Of course, after a few months she gave in and we were talking regularly, my big brother has helped her out tremendously, by helping her get an apartment and car, now my little brother is in kindergarten doing well along with her, my grandparents inherrited big bucks and are a part of my mom again, trying to help her. Now, up here with my dad, he's barely working, we have no car now, and he's been depending on everyone else to take care of him. We're two months behind rent and (this is why I'm able to go on here) he'd rather pay the internet/cable bill because we know the owner here and he'll "work with us", I agree that he will be more than willing to work with us, but there is only so much a person can take. I mean on top of all this, he smokes pot, does TONS of scratch off tickets, and I've walked in on him four or five times watching porn and I know it's not the end of the world but there are better things he could do with his money. Recently, he won five thousand dollars on a scratch off, and did nothing to better our situation. He didn't buy a car, he didn't save it, he didn't pay off the rent, and I have no idea where it vanished to. I mean we have food stamps, so we eat, but we're getting ready to be kicked out of this place, and again I'm scared to tell my brother because he is overseas in Afghanistan, but I know he could help. I miss him so much, and I just cry every single time I think about him. I have no clue what to do, I just want time to be a kid, I'm only fourteen in 8th grade, so I can't get a legitimate job, and I've tried baby-sitting, but no-one is interested. I just don't feel like

hi, im planning a trip around america, and when i mean, around america, i mean every state. (except alaska and hawaii) but anyway, what do you guys think would be the best way of transport for me to get around? i was thinking of a motor home, itd be good cause i wouldnt have to spend any money on motels/hotels but its also bad because you cant really park a motor home at theme parks and casinos and restaurants and stuff like that. so would you know any car rental places that will let you hire cars to ge around america for around 6 months. if not, is there any other way of transport that you would recommend? (im not flying, and i dont necessarily want to go taxi/bus hopping, so can you guys help me out? so far, i think motorhomes is the best idea, (i am not going to hitchhike lol) id buy a used car then sell when i get back, except that that will make me pay a lot more money on hotels and stuff. so does everyone agree that motorhome would be best idea? or does anyone else have any ideas?
