The American Automobile Association (AAA) classifies motels as a limited service lodging type with the following definition: "A low-rise or multistory establishment offering limited public and recreational facilities." Motels or Motor Lodges offer accommodations in low-rise structures with rooms easily accessible to parking (which is usually free). Properties have outdoor entry and small, functional lobbies. Service is often limited, and dining may not be offered in lower-rated motels and lodges. Shops and businesses are found only in higher-rated properties, as are bellhops, room service, and restaurants serving three meals daily. Therefore it attracted settlers from all parts of the country and developed a culture significant for its diversity. Ohio first developed as an agricultural region, and more than half of the land is still devoted to growing crops and raising livestock. Ohio entered the Union on March 1, 1803, as the 17th state. Columbus is Ohio's capital and largest city. Cleveland is the second largest city and lies at the heart of Ohio's largest metropolitan area. The Cleveland metropolitan area consists of portions of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, and Medina counties. The third largest city is Cincinnati. It is the leading commercial center in southern Ohio and serves as an important river port and industrial city. The Cincinnati metropolitan area extends into Kentucky and Indiana.

There are numerous federal and state-administered parks and recreation areas in Ohio that provide facilities for boating, swimming, hiking, and a variety of other outdoor activities.
